Fourteen months after the survey, the authors followed up with respondents to see if they were still without smoking during the previous month. What they found was that those who consumed the most fruits and vegetables were 3 times more likely to refrain from tobacco for at least 30 days than those who consumed small amounts of fruits and vegetables. In addition, those who consumed more fruits and vegetables smoked less frequently a day, waited longer before smoking their first daily cigarette and obtained better results in a nicotine-dependent test.

The increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables helps people quit smoking due to the following reasons:

  1. Less dependence on nicotine.
  2. The high fiber content makes people feel more satisfied, since smokers sometimes confuse hunger with the desire to smoke.
  3. Unlike meats, alcohol and caffeinated drinks, fruits and vegetables do not improve and may even worsen the taste of tobacco.
  4. Engaging in a healthier lifestyle could, consciously and unconsciously, make smokers quit even more unhealthy lifestyle related to smoking.
